Character Counter
Count characters with and without spaces. The primary count is grapheme clusters, so emoji count as one.
Processed in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
Primary metric: characters as you see them (grapheme clusters). An emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts as 1. Unicode code points and UTF-16 code units (what JavaScript reports) are shown below and can be higher, which matters for platforms that count differently.
Shows how many characters are left or over.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Read the main count (characters as you see them) and the secondary counts.
- Optionally enter a character limit to see how many are left or over.
- Copy the counts.
Example
- A family emoji between two letters
- Input:a👨👩👧👦b
- Result:3 characters (9 code points, 13 UTF-16 code units)
What does Character Counter do?
Character Counter counts the characters in your text with and without spaces, and shows how many are left under an optional limit.
How does Character Counter work?
The main count uses the browser's Intl.Segmenter to count characters as you see them, so an emoji or a flag counts as one. The counting runs in your browser.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Your text is counted in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Which formats and inputs does Character Counter support?
Inputs: Plain text typed or pasted into the box; An optional character limit. Output: The main count (grapheme clusters) plus code points, UTF-16 code units and lines.
What are the limits and limitations of Character Counter?
Limits: maximum text length 5,000,000 characters; tested with text of at least 1 MB. Without Intl.Segmenter the main count falls back to Unicode code points. Platforms that count UTF-16 code units can report higher numbers for emoji.
More questions
Which count is the main one?
Grapheme clusters, the characters you actually see. Code points and UTF-16 units are shown as secondary counts.
Why can another site show a higher number?
JavaScript counts UTF-16 code units, so an emoji can count as 2 or more there.
